💌 Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Compassion & Connection

February 2025 | The Brook Center Therapy Solutions

At The Brook Center, we welcomed February by embracing what we love most: our families, our clients, and the power of connection. As the weather slowly warms and signs of spring begin to bloom, we focused this month on helping families find joy, create memories, and beat the winter blues with purpose and compassion.

💖 Valentine’s Sensory Ideas for Home

Valentine’s Day offers wonderful opportunities for sensory play! Here are a few simple, ABA-informed ideas to enjoy at home:

  • Homemade Valentine’s Cards â€“ Use glitter glue, textured paper, and stickers to create a hands-on card-making activity.
  • Cookie Decorating â€“ Heart-shaped cookies with brightly colored frosting and sprinkles are a fun and tasty way to practice following directions and fine motor skills.
  • Painted Handprint Hearts â€“ Using red, white, and pink paint, kids can create handprint hearts while engaging in a calming sensory experience.

🧸 Creating Meaningful Traditions

Holidays often disrupt routines — especially in schools. Creating your own consistent family traditions on Valentine’s Day can help reduce stress and support emotional regulation. Some ideas we love:

  • A yearly stuffed animal gift
  • Making heart-shaped brownies or pizza
  • A cozy hot chocolate night
  • A special family date or sensory-friendly outing

One of our RBTs even celebrates each Valentine’s Day with a heart-shaped pizza — a fun and easy tradition to try!

📚 Bringing the Holiday Home

Valentine’s Day is also a great time to incorporate learning in playful ways. You can:

  • Read Valentine’s-themed books with your child (great for younger or nonverbal learners)
  • Watch short educational videos about kindness and love
  • Try themed word searches or practice “love” words (like hug, care, heart)

Bringing the holiday home allows families to celebrate while reinforcing therapeutic goals in fun and functional ways.

❄️ Beating the Winter Blues

This time of year often brings cold weather, unpredictable routines, and the lingering effects of winter illness. That’s why we love Valentine’s Day as a mid-winter boost. It’s a perfect chance to focus on warmth, joy, and connection — and to welcome the growth and renewal that spring promises.

We hope these ideas support your family and bring some heart-filled happiness this season. ❤️
